Hi, my name is Megan. I am a junior at Athens Drive, and this "hunger walk" is for the product portion of my graduation project. For those unfamiliar with the graduation project, it is a project that some counties require their
high school students to
complete, mostly during their junior year, in order
to graduate. The project requires 3 parts: an essential question, a paper, and a product. In English, we wrote an 8-12 page research paper based on our essential question. An essential question is a question that a student comes up with based on a topic about which they are passionate. The question cannot be a yes/no question; research must be done in order to find the answer. Then the research is put together to form the paper. My essential question is "If there is enough food to feed everyone in the world, why do 50,000 people die each day from hunger? And what can be done about it?" The product has to be something done in the community that relates to the topic or essential question. So for my product idea, I came up with the idea of the "Feeding Frenzy." My goal with is event is to raise money for our trip to Bolivia and to see first hand how that money helps people. I also hope that people will become more aware of hunger and get involved to try to do something to help stop it. The reason I chose World Hunger as my topic is because this is something I have been passionate about for a long time. When I was in 6th grade, my mom and I went on a mission trip to Haiti. Seeing the hunger and poverty there really struck me, and then I realized that something needs to be done. Every human has an equal right to have access to food, and no one should be denied of that right. It is possible to live in a world without starvation; the first step is awareness, which is where I am starting.
